MY COVID-19 JOURNEY

Do you know that careful person in the midst of this pandmic? That’s me. Staying distant, not shaking hands, wearing a mask.

In spite of my caution, I came down with Covid-19 symptoms in the early hours on Monday, July 20. Aches, pains, loss of taste and smell, digestive issues, fever, chills, coughing, shortness of breath.

This went on for for some 14 days. After 14 days of monitoring my oxygen levels, I could see that it was dropping below the safe range, which meant a weekend trip to the hospital to treat pneumonia on Friday, July 31. I was released the following Sunday afternoon.

That’s when my symptoms ended–Saturday, August 1. I’ve been symptom free for 10 days now, but I’m far from myself. During this period, my entire household–my wife, three sons and 80-some-year-old mother all contracted the coronavirus and COVID-19. Presently, my 20 year-old and 12 year-old sons seem to have recovered their energy and strength. Our 21 year-old is still rebuilding his strength. My wife Tracy seems to go up and down with strength, as do I.

I still have extraordinary weakness and tiredness, but the doctor has said it sometimes takes weeks or even months to fully recover from this illness.

As I look back on this, I am grateful to God for his keeping hand and the people who were praying all around me. It was definitely the hardest physical knock I’ve taken in my life. I understand much better now from a personal point of view why COVID is a national and global crisis.

God’s hand rests on the weak to make them strong. I have felt that hand during this time of incredible trial.
