2019-2020 fellowships awarded for Purdue-community partnerships
Purdue’s Office of Engagement in partnership with the United Way has selected five community agencies and 12 Purdue partners for its 2019-2020 Service-Learning Fellows and Sustaining Service-Learning Fellows programs. These fellowship programs foster the development and institutionalization of service-learning courses and curricula, projects, and scholarly pursuits at Purdue, strengthening collaborative efforts in our community.
To apply, Purdue faculty and graduate students propose service-learning courses responding to needs expressed by community partners. This process is innovative among community engagement programs, which often have faculty lead the program process; Purdue’s program puts community needs, as articulated by the community partners themselves, first.
Purdue and community partners will collaborate over the next year to connect student learning goals to desired community outcomes, set a course calendar, and assess student work. Each partnership receives up to $4000 grant to fund their project.
This year’s sponsored projects according to economic calendar include a community health needs assessment, youth leadership program development, financial planning workshops for young professionals, community housing data analysis, and a marketing plan for local conservation efforts.
