31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” –John 8:31-32
As a pastor, I find myself addressing people’s sinful attitudes about sin all the time. It’s because sin so distorts our own perspective and creates a self-justifying line of thought so as to perpetuate itself. In essence, we sin over sin.
How do we do that, you ask? Have you ever heard yourself saying any of the following?
1. Jesus died for all my sins, so it doesn’t matter.
2. It’s a little sin, so it doesn’t matter.
3. No one’s getting hurt, so it doesn’t matter. After all, we’re consenting adults.
4. No one knows what I’m doing, so it doesn’t matter.
5. Well, that’s just our culture so it doesn’t matter.
6. God knows my heart, so it doesn’t really matter.
Those are just a few of the things we say about sin in an attempt to keep sin alive in our lives, but sin leads to death. The wages of sin is death–that’s what the Bible says.
Stop kidding yourself today, seek forgiveness, turn from your sin, and start obeying God, and then and only then, will the truth set you free.
