“Seek first the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto you.”  –Matthew 6:33

“For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”  –Romans 14:17

Jesus cuts to the heart of the matter and provides the vital spiritual quest for everyone following him in one phrase—seek the kingdom of God above everything else.  For us, in the midst of our fast, we come to clarity with just how scatterbrained we are—we pursue so many things that are a diversion from what is truly essential in our lives.
Today, as you come to the close of one week fasting, direct the waking moments that you have toward seeking God and his kingdom.  Take captive the loose thoughts and desires that would draw you away from singularity of purpose.  Put to rest all competing interest and seek God’s kingdom—righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
Finally, recognize that the coming year is sure to be one full of blessing.  You are seeking God’s kingdom FIRST in the New Year here in January.  Expect a year full of times where you see God adding “all these things unto you”!
